Sitting & Reading room

Bringing a sitting room and conservatory into the light

My clients’s brief was to transform their grand sitting room and conservatory into a communal, streamlined and multifunctional space. Their ideal outcome was a bright, warm and zoned room with plenty of seating and storage for their beloved things. The sitting room had a conservatory that my clients wanted replacing with a bay window including french doors opening out onto their garden, opening up the wall between the two connected spaces also helped to bring more light into both rooms.

As a completed design, it had five zones - a piano area (not pictured due to the Christmas tree), an art deco bar area, a sitting area, a casual office area and a reading area with bookcases. This helped the rooms evolve into much more versatile spaces and the chairs could be moved when needed.

The colour palette was inspired by the clients’ love of Padstow; using muted stone, white and grey blues resulting in a calm and considered look. In the design a classic English country look was used which included herringbone wooden look flooring, handmade corniced bookcases and dressers, tall skirting boards and a traditional seating arrangement upholstered in nature inspired and sandy coloured fabrics to bring the outside in.

The end result is a coherent and high quality design in keeping with the house, it has a heritage feel with a couple of contemporary twists like a Wisteria chandelier a rose gold floor lamp. The clients are delighted with their new sitting and reading room, especially the flow of the two rooms with the amount of versatile zones.

The clients’s love of Padstow and classic English country, along with a liking for bespoke handmade furniture, helped me to bring the design together.
